Leveraging digital platforms for social sustainability: steering user behaviour

This research project investigates the potential of Digital Platforms (DPs) to contribute to the global sustainability agenda, focusing on Social Sustainability (SS). In an era of rapid technological advancements, DPs have become powerful tools capable of shaping societal behaviours and values. This research addresses a gap in existing literature, which often overlooks the transformative role of DPs in fostering sustainable behaviours and societal changes. The central research question explores how DPs influence societal behaviours towards sustainability, aiming to uncover their untapped potential in promoting SS.

By focusing on user-level analytical approaches, the study seeks to understand the behavioural changes induced by DPs and their ability to bridge the gap between sustainable intentions and actions. The research offers actionable strategies and mechanisms for DPs to promote social sustainability, particularly relevant for developing countries. Additionally, it aims to illuminate effective incentive structures that guide users towards socially sustainable behaviours, providing a roadmap for platform managers and developers to enhance user engagement and drive sustainable actions.
